We condemn the destruction of nests and the damage caused to the Magellanic penguin colony of the Punta Tombo Reserve and request the reinforcement of their protection.

Dozens of Magellanic penguins were killed in the middle of their breeding season after a man drove a bulldozer over an 800-meter road in the Punta Tombo Important Bird Area (AICA) in Chubut, Argentina.

Workshop to identify Argentina’s marine ecosystems

Scientists and government professionals participated in the “First Workshop for the Identification of Argentina’s Marine Ecosystems”, which was held virtually on December 15. The main goal of the process, which would conclude in 2021, is the development of a map of Argentina’s marine environments. This contribution will guide management and conservation actions and evaluate the ecological representativeness of the ecoregions within the Marine Protected Areas of the Argentine Sea.

Contributions on fishing in Argentina’s national Marine Protected Areas

Strengthening the implementation of Argentina’s National System of Marine Protected Areas is fundamental to reach its objectives. A necessary condition is the integration of updated knowledge and the systematization of recommendations from all the actors involved. Under this premise, the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea convened representatives from various sectors to discuss and provide input on fishing in Argentina’s national Marine Protected Areas, within the framework of a virtual technical workshop held on December 3.

During the third and last meeting of the cycle (“Challenges for the conservation of the Patagonian Sea”), we reflected on the future of Marine Protected Areas of the Patagonian Sea, in the context of both socio-environmental changes and climate change. The Chilean Secretary of Science, Andrés Couve, took part at the beginning of the seminar, together with representatives of the public and cientific sector, and the civil society.

Effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas on the conservation and management of biodiversity

Over 200 people took part in the second webinar of the cycle: “Challenges for the Patagonian Sea’s conservation: Chile and Argentina’s outlooks on the planning and implementation of MPA systems”. There were presentations and a round table to discuss the challenges and opportunities in order to achieve effective and representative Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) systems.
