Which are the potential threats associated with human activities at sea? Which are the main institutional strengthening challenges for the management of marine protected areas? The objective of the “Technical Workshop on the Implementation of National Marine Protected Areas in the Argentine Sea, challenges for the implementation of effective MPAs” was to begin outlining some answers to these and other questions.

Tierra del Fuego was home to a broad debate on salmon farming in the Beagle Channel

As part of the “National Week of Science and Technology” activities held in Ushuaia, the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea participated in a round table on aquaculture projects in the Beagle Channel. More than 100 people participated in a 3-hour dialogue about the risks of salmon farming.

Progress towards the establishment of a marine protected area in the Antarctic Peninsula

At the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea and Areas of Influence we see with great pleasure the effort destined to establish a marine protected area in the Antarctic Peninsula and we want to congratulate the Argentine Antarctic Institute, the Chilean Antarctic Institute and the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs for the excellent work they have done.

Environmental organizations warn about salmon farming risks in Tierra del Fuego

A report issued by the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea and Areas of influence warns of the serious impacts that salmon and trout farming would have on the Argentine coast if the initiatives being considered by the national government and the province of Tierra del Fuego are approved.

The second year of the Regional School for Managers of Marine Protected Areas begins

For the second consecutive year, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay join efforts to strengthen the capacities of people responsible for Marine Protected Areas in order to contribute to MPAs effective management. In memoriam: Pablo Bordino

Pablo Bordino was a friend, mentor and guide for many members of the Forum. He left positive marks in all of them as well as in our Patagonian Sea. The study and conservation of Franciscana dolphin carried out by AquaMarina, an NGO founded and directed by him since 1998, sure was one of them. Pablo died on June 11, 2018 in the city of Pinamar, Buenos Aires. Since then, we miss him deeply, and we are inspired to keep honoring his legacy regarding marine conservation.

Yaganes and Burdwood 2 might be the new Marine Protected Areas of the Argentine Sea. The bill for their creation is already in Congress. The sea gives us life. The time to protect it has come.

What to do next regarding marine protected areas?

Southern Cone countries are planning and creating new Marine Protected Areas. From statements to actions, Rodrigo Guijón -Coordinator of the WCS’s Chile Marine Program- reflects on the key points needed to achieve the effectiveness intended for the MPAs created. And a test case: the School for the Management of Marine Protected Areas of the Southern Cone, destined to train professionals responsible for MPAs in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Chile declares new MPAs and its marine protected area reaches 42%

On February 27, the Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, signed the decrees to create 5 new Marine Protected Areas that will contribute to give 42% of the marine surface of this country some degree of protection.
