EXTRACT FROM THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LATINAMERICA ANNOUNCEMENT
On the night of Tuesday, November 13, in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, National Geographic presented the documentary “Yaganes”. The audiovisual piece shows the result of an unprecedented expedition, carried out by National Geographic’s conservation initiative Pristine Seas, to the Argentine zone of Tierra del Fuego, Isla de los Estados and the oceanic part of the Drake passage, known as the Yaganes basin.
Seaweed, sea urchins, starfish, penguins, sea lions and fish of the strangest shapes and colors imaginable inhabit this pristine area of the Argentine Sea. However, all that reach biodiversity is threatened by climate change and indiscriminate industrial fishing.
The results of the investigation conducted by Pristine Seas reveal that Yaganes is unquestionably a unique area of enormous ecological value that must be protected; at the same time, they endorse the bill for the creation of the marine national park in the area.
