“May we be a sea of people for the Sea”
The ocean connects us, and in 2020 -despite new barriers and challenges-, we confirmed it:

We generated intersectoral dialogue processes, enriched by a regional approach, to address the challenges of the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) systems of Argentina and Chile through a cycle of Webinars.

We published two new reports on the Evaluation of the State of Conservation of Species for the Patagonian Sea according to IUCN Red List criteria –Bony Fishes and Chondrichthyans– prepared together with specialists from the region.

We brought together more than 50 professionals from science, fisheries, civil society and public organizations in Argentina, to dialogue and make contributions on sustainable fishing to the national MPA of Argentina.

We started a process together with scientists and professionals from the Argentine government to advance in the development of a unified map of the marine environments of Argentina.

We organized workshops with Scientific Approach on Marine Ecosystems and their Representation in MPA in Chile.

We made progress on issues of Representativeness, Effectiveness and Financial sustainability of MPA together with the Technical Committee of MPA of Chile and members of the Forum.

We went through a new course at the AMP Management School of the Southern Cone, successfully strengthening the capacities of 18 AMP managers from Argentina, and Chile.

We celebrated the declaration of admissibility of Isla Guafo as a Coastal Marine Area of Indigenous Peoples (ECMPO).

We strengthened the Clean Patagonian Sea working group and designed projects to address marine pollution by plastics from fishing on a regional scale.

We exchange ideas with 100 journalists from Latin America about the importance of a new language to think and talk about the sea.

We continue to support the results of the Regional Workshop on the Carcharias taurus shark in the Southwest Atlantic: transboundary efforts for its conservation.

We supported the 2nd Conference on Oceans in Uruguay, in which experts from the region stressed the importance of unifying efforts for the marine protection of the Southern Cone.

Our network continued to grow and strengthen: we welcomed new members of the network, we renewed the authorities of our Steering Group, and we held our annual plenary meeting 100% virtual, with the same commitment as always.
In 2021, we will continue to strengthen cooperation and networking at a regional scale for the conservation of the sea.
