Declaration of Mar del Plata: Marine Protected Areas NOW 1200 1200 The Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea

Argentine member organizations of the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea and Areas of Influence, meeting in Mar del Plata during their XVI Plenary Session, ask the honorable Chamber of Deputies of Argentina for the urgent treatment of the bill for the CREATION OF THE PROTECTED MARINE AREAS NAMUNCURA – BURDWOOD BANK II AND YAGANES before the close of its regular sessions scheduled for November 21, 2018, in order to avoid the loss of its parliamentary status and the breach of the commitments made regarding marine conservation.

Currently, only 2.6% of the Argentine Sea is protected. The sanction of the aforementioned project would triple this value, contributing to the conservation of marine biodiversity, to a spatial planning that integrates the protection and management of marine resources and to the adaptation of the oceanic ecosystem to climate change. For this reason, the treatment and sanction of the project above are urgent, since their importance will strengthen an integral policy of Argentina towards the sea.
