Representativeness of Ecosystems in Marine Protected Areas of Chilean Patagonia
2022

With over 43% of its Exclusive Economic Zone under protection, Chile is considered a global leader in marine conservation. However, this protected area still lacks significant representativeness from a biological and ecological perspective, as it tends to focus on protecting oceanic areas with relatively low anthropogenic influence.

This document aims to contribute to the decision-making process to improve representativeness in marine protection in Chilean Patagonia, based on biological data and consensus-driven conservation objectives.

Through comprehensive work that included updating georeferenced databases on protected areas, reviewing literature on threats, holding meetings with specialists, and analyzing information, the report seeks to answer four central questions: How are MPAs distributed across the different ecoregions and ecosystems of Patagonia? Which marine sites have been identified as the most relevant or prioritized in regional analyses? What are the main pressures and threats to Patagonian marine biodiversity, and where are they located? And which coastal-marine sites should be prioritized for managing these pressures and threats?
