First map of Argentina’s marine bioregions
2023

Within the framework of the Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea and with the support of Oceans5, WCS Argentina brought together more than 40 marine science specialists and coordinated a 4-year effort to synthesize knowledge and data on the heterogeneity of the Argentine Sea.

As a result, a unified map of Argentina’s marine bioregions was developed, identifying 11 large, relatively homogeneous areas with distinct physical, biological, and ecological structures compared to their neighboring areas. This collaborative effort represents a significant scientific and technical contribution that could guide the expansion of Argentina’s National System of Marine Protected Areas.
