We promote environmental education to strengthen public knowledge about marine biodiversity and its threats. We foster environmental awareness and empower regional communities for the long-term conservation of the Patagonian Sea.
The Patagonian Sea and its areas of influence, shared by Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil, form a unique and vulnerable ecosystem. Its conservation depends not only on direct actions but also on a profound transformation in the environmental awareness of the communities living in this region.
We believe that education is a fundamental pillar for driving meaningful change in environmental awareness, encouraging the adoption of conservation values and conscious action in defense of this ecosystem.
That is why we strive to create synergies among Forum organizations to develop educational programs that benefit communities, fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange. This collaboration has the potential to strengthen educational capacities in the region and create a lasting impact on the environmental awareness of future generations.
While students from coastal and rural communities in the region face challenges in accessing environmental education, the protected natural areas surrounding them provide a unique opportunity to connect with marine ecosystems’ biodiversity. It is essential to create educational opportunities that allow students and teachers to develop a deeper connection with their natural environment, fostering an understanding of ecosystem value and the need for their protection.
Environmental education based on real experiences—including initiatives such as workshops, outdoor activities, and, whenever possible, visits to Protected Natural Areas (PNA)—is crucial to fostering pro-environmental attitudes and encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices within communities.
The region’s environmental challenges—such as the overexploitation of marine resources, pollution, and the impacts of climate change—require an educational approach that includes coastal communities, students, educators, and decision-makers. In response, the Forum has developed a strategy that combines knowledge exchange, educator training, and the creation of shared resources to strengthen educational capacities in the region.
The Environmental Education Working Group of the Forum implements and promotes various strategic actions to strengthen the environmental education approach in the region, with the goal of generating a lasting impact. Among these initiatives, the following stand out:
Through workshops and regular meetings, we promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices among member organizations. These dialogue spaces enrich environmental education strategies and generate creative solutions to the challenges facing the conservation of the Patagonian Sea and its areas of influence.
We focus on strengthening the capacities of environmental educators through training programs that cover key areas, such as measuring educational impact and integrating conservation values into curricula. These programs enable our network members to enhance their pedagogical and methodological skills, fostering high-quality education focused on conservation.
The Working Group continues to develop new initiatives aimed at expanding the reach of environmental education in the region. The online platform continues to grow, incorporating new resources and facilitating access to educational materials for an increasingly broad audience. Knowledge exchange workshops and internal training sessions are also becoming a key part of the Group’s work, with a continuous focus on improving educator training and fostering collaboration between organizations.
Collaborative work among the Forum’s member organizations is a key component of the success of the Environmental Education Working Group. Through the network, knowledge exchange, joint project creation, and the pursuit of innovative solutions to the region’s challenges are facilitated.
