Scientists and government professionals participated in the “First Workshop for the Identification of Argentina’s Marine Ecosystems”, which was held virtually on December 15. The main goal of the process, which would conclude in 2021, is the development of a map of Argentina’s marine environments. This contribution will guide management and conservation actions and evaluate the ecological representativeness of the ecoregions within the Marine Protected Areas of the Argentine Sea.

Strengthening the implementation of Argentina’s National System of Marine Protected Areas is fundamental to reach its objectives. A necessary condition is the integration of updated knowledge and the systematization of recommendations from all the actors involved. The Forum for the Conservation of the Patagonian Sea launched a series of webinars. This cycle aimed to encourage the dialogue on what the challenges are in order to achieve Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that effectively represent the sea’s varied ecosystems and that are able to stand their ground in the face of climate change. The webinars focused on Chile and Argentina as case studies to showcase the vastness of the Patagonian Sea.
